Scientific Advisory Board

The Scientific Advisory Board is regulated by Article 10 of Decree no. 84-428 of 5 June 1984 (consolidated version: 29 July 2010):

“A scientific advisory board, operating in close conjunction with the president of the Institute, is consulted by the president on the research programmes and on the scientific aspects of the technology development programmes carried out by IFREMER. The scientific advisory board shares its opinions on the overall rationale of these programmes and ranks the different proposals. It issues recommendations on investments in major equipment of general interest, whose management is entrusted to IFREMER for the benefit of all users, and periodically reviews and assesses the obtained results. It can also formulate proposals regarding the orientation of research.

The scientific advisory board has sixteen members, of whom at least one is of foreign nationality. Thirteen members, including the president of the board, are nominated via a joint order by the ministers that supervise the Institute and five are suggested by the president of IFREMER. Three members are elected by IFREMER staff according to the procedures stipulated in the joint decree from the ministries that supervise the Institute. The members of the scientific advisory board sit for a five-year term, which can be renewed.

The scientific advisory board is convened by its president, or if necessary, upon request of the president of the Institute.”
